Libertarians Oppose Taxpayer Funded Cancer Research
DALLAS - July 17, 2007 - On July 14, 2007, the state executive committee of the Libertarian Party of Texas (LPT) unanimously approved a resolution opposing a $3 billion spending initiative for the November 6 ballot. The initiative was placed on the ballot by HJR 90 in the recent state legislative session.
Voters in Texas will have the opportunity to reject this constitutional amendment to authorize $3 billion in state spending in a statewide election on November 6, 2007.
State chair Patrick Dixon said, "At a time of onerous property tax burdens and endless increases in government spending, we think taxpayers need a break."
Dixon continued, "We understand the need for research to cure all forms of disease, pain, and suffering. We do not think that politicians should decide for us what research is most deserving and use coercion to make us pay. We are concerned for the many organizations that accept voluntary donations to help fight these diseases. By increasing the tax burden, this constitutional amendment would take away discretionary funds from donors."
The resolution passed by the LPT state committee reads:
"Whereas the Libertarian Party defends the right of people to make their own choices with their voluntary donations;
"Whereas many organizations solicit voluntary donations for research of AIDS, Alzheimers Disease, Heart Disease, and other diseases;
"Whereas HJR 90 will impose a $3 billion tax burden on the people of Texas which will damage the ability of organizations to raise voluntary donations;
"Be it resolved that the Libertarian Party of Texas opposes HJR 90 and urges voters to vote NO on November 6."
