Austin, TX - 187 candidates have filed with the Libertarian Party of Texas to run for federal, state, and district offices in 2006. This breaks the previous record of 110 candidates, set in 2002.
The number of 187 does not include candidates who have filed for county-level offices.
Libertarian candidates filed for every statewide race except Presiding Judge of the Court of Criminal Appeals. Libertarians filed for 30 of the 32 US House seats, 11 of the 16 Texas Senate seats, 97 of the 150 Texas House seats, and 4 of the 8 State Board of Education seats.
The official list of candidates will be submitted to the Texas Secretary of State by January 12.
Candidates will be nominated at county and district conventions in March, and at the state convention in June.
Many nominations will be contested. Among the contests, three candidates filed for US Senate, and five filed for Texas House in District 97.
