(LAGO VISTA, TEXAS) Voters in Lago Vista, a Travis County city of some
5,000 residents, overwhelmingly elected Texas Libertarian Party chair
Patrick J. "Pat" Dixon to their city council on Saturday, May 7th.
Final results for the Place 1 seat showed Dixon defeated the incumbent by
a 68%-32% margin. Dixon ran an active and energetic campaign, including
print advertisement, phone banks, targeted mailings, candidate forums, and
door to door campaigning.
"This is further proof," Dixon noted, "that when the rules are the same
for all candidates, and special-interest money is not an overpowering
factor, Libertarians can, and often do, win. Since most Americans are
basically libertarians at heart, that's really not so surprising."
Dixon ran for city council not to promote Libertarian power, but to
fulfill his civic duty. "Our city is a wonderful place but we have some
serious issues that need to be addressed," Dixon said, citing lawsuits,
public debt and property disputes as examples.
"You don't want to go through life and say you had the opportunity to make
a difference, and passed it up."
The Libertarian Party was founded in 1971 to oppose growing government
intrusion into the economy and the personal lives of American citizens.
Over the past 10 years, the number of Libertarians in public office has
grown from 100 to over 600 in both elective and appointive office.
