HOUSTON - The National Taxpayers' Union, a major political activist group dedicated to fiscal responsibility in federal government, has endorsed Brent Sullivan for election to the House of Representatives.

Sullivan, the Libertarian nominee in Texas House District 18 in north Houston, seeks to unseat incumbent Democrat Sheila Jackson-Lee. Tom Bazan is also running for election as an independent. No Republican is challenging Jackson-Lee for the election.

Jackson-Lee has received a failing grade of F from the NTU every year of her House career, according to National Taxpayer Union Campaign Fund president John Berthoud. "With a 29 percent spending run-up over the last four years, an entitlement crisis looming on the horizon, and rapidly-rising deficits, Texas taxpayers simply cannot afford Sheila Jackson Lee's tax-and-spend politics any longer," he said in a press release October 25.

"Representative Jackson Lee's votes against permanently increasing the child tax credit, against providing lasting marriage tax penalty relief, against making the recently-enacted tax cuts permanent, and against enacting tough federal spending limits, all add up to a direct assault on America's hardworking families and businesses," said Berthoud.

"Brent Sullivan is obviously the only candidate in this contest who is dedicated to operating Washington's budget the way Texas families effectively manage their own budgets."

Brent Sullivan won the NTU's endorsement for his support of private savings plans to replace Social Security, reduced government spending and tax relief. The Libertarian Party in general advocates smaller, less expensive government and lower taxes.

Only one of Texas' 32 Representatives, Ron Paul (R - Surfside), earned an A grade from the NTU. Libertarians oppose 30 of the remaining 31 in the November 2 election.
